Technology overview
Internal combustion engines are used as a means
of propulsion and auxiliary power for a wide range
of military applications. Whilst alternative power
sources are being developed, the internal combustion
engine is the only proven option for the short
and medium term
for many of these applications. However, the exhaust
from internal combustion engines, and particularly
from diesel engines, can have a significant impact
on
the detection and hence survivability of the particular
platform.
There are three main contributions to platform
signatures:
- Visible signature – smoke and particulates
- Acoustic signature – noise
- Infra-red (IR) signature – heat, exhaust
plume
AEA Technology (AEAT) have developed a number
of technologies with the capability to modify exhaust
properties and composition that could have significant
benefits for signature management.
